Sold 70 OSI Pharmaceuticals (OSIP) @ $48.82

Sold all of my OSIP for the following reasons:

  1. Lost -8%. I have a -8% loss rule. I had to stick to it.

Buy 23 OSI Pharmaceuticals (OSIP) @ $53.40

Added to my position in OSI Pharmaceuticals for the following reasons:

  1. After pulling back on very low trading volume the past 2 weeks, OSIP crossed a $53.56 buy point on big volume this morning (+100% above average daily volume).
  2. I wanted to add to my position because OSIP was still close to the old buy point of $52.48 (see previous post) and the new buy point of $53.56. I felt that adding shares as close to the buy points as possible would give me some cushion just in case the stock reversed later.
  3. The low trading volume over the last 2 weeks or so showed that big institutional investors were not selling OSIP. This bucked the recent trend we’ve seen of stocks reversing after their breakouts on heavy volume. OSIP has not lost too much ground since breaking out above the original buy point of $52.48.

Sold 178 Monolithic Power (MPWR) @ $25.85

Had to sell entire position in MPWR for the following reasons:

  1. MPWR gapped down -7% this morning on huge volume.
  2. Pushed me into a -9% loss and I had to stick to -8% sell rule.

Buy 89 Monolithic Power System (MPWR) @ $28.21

Added to position in MPWR:

  1. I had originally bought my first position at about +2.5% above the $27.60 buy point. Ifigured that since it dropped below that, I would bring down my average ’safely’. What you’re supposed to do is buy at that buy point and buy more if it goes above your initial purchase price. I figured that I was kinda doing the same thing by buying more at this point instead of waiting for it to go higher on me.

Buy 89 Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR) @ $28.41

Started a position in Monotlithic Power for the following reasons:

  1. Passed $27.60 buy point of cup base on strong volume
  2. Member of the #37 ranked Elec-Semiconductor Mfg Group in IBD’s Industry Group Rankings
  3. Had been showing bullish action the past few weeks

Bought 27 of OSI Pharmaceuticals Inc. (OSIP) @ $53.10

Started a position in OSI Pharmaceuticals Inc. (OSIP) for the following reasons:

  1. Broke out of a long cup-with-handle base with a buy point of $52.48 on strong volume (+400% as of 10am)
  2. Its Medical-Biomed/Biotech industry group has been doing well during the recent market rally. Several notable stocks from this group have also shown strong action, including:
    1. Celgene (CELG)
    2. Amgen (AMGN)
    3. Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN)
    4. Martek Biosciences Corp. (MATK)
  3. Medical-Biomed/Biotech industry group is ranked #12 on IBD’s Industry Group Ratings.
  4. Medical equipment and biotech groups have been doing very well recently. I really wanted to get a decent stock to take advantage of this trend.
  5. I was either going to buy MATK or OSIP.  OSI Pharmaceuticals’ strong action this morning prompted me to start a position in it as it was crossing its buy point.

Sold 96 Continental Resources (CLR) @ $73.23

  1. CLR went down -10% today on heavy volume after being downgraded
  2. I was down -7% when I sold

I shouldn’t have bought Continental Resources. Even though it was bounced off of the line, its just too risky to buy stocks when the markets are going down. I also shouldn’t have gotten greedy and bought more than I usually do.

Buy 32 Continental Resources (CLR) @ $77.60

  1. Came down a bit to within +1.8% of the $76.20 buypoint
  2. Looking at the recent action this week, it looked like there was a lot of support because of how many times it closed in the upper half of its range
  3. Despite being down today, I guessed that the it would close closer to its intra-day high

Posted on July 11, 2008 - by andrew

Buy 32 Continental Resources (CLR) @ $81.69

  1. Was extended past the $80.010 +5% extended mark from the $76.20 buypoint. But my average price came out to $79.48 or within +4% of the buypoint.
  2. Shot up another +4% this morning despite the markets being weak

Posted on July 10, 2008 - by andrew

Buy 32 Continental Resources (CLR) @ $77.28

  1. Passed $76.20 buypoint of flat base on high volume today
  2. Was up +19% on huge volume today
  3. Previous run-up was very strong
  4. Part of top group
  5. Did not notice any selling on the daily chart that was too alarming.
  6. Down days showed reversals from the bottom to end in the upper half of the daily range

Only thing I’m really worried about is that the market’s in a correction (though its kinda in a rally attempt right now) and its a little extended past its 200 day moving average (+80% above it).

Thoughts on my performance 10/08/07 - 10/16/07

I really have only been making money on CSCT. I have made money on other stocks, but they just reversed and I ended up losing my gains.

To me, my mistakes came from picking stocks that were too volatile, being too eager to buy something with my money, not being more patient in waiting for the true leaders to pass buypoints, not taking heed to IBD saying that the rally usually corrects a little bit around 6-7 weeks into it……..I really did not understand that this meant the whole market goes down and I shouldn’t be buying, but waiting for the rally to resume

Buy 53 Arena Resources (ARD) @ $47.48

Started a position in ARD:

  1. 3rd ranked member in IBD’s top ranked group
  2. 3 of the top 5 in the group have had big gains in the past few daysm including CLR whose been a market leader since the rally started
  3. ARD reported earnings that beat analyst estimates.
  4. ARD up +4%  this morning on above avg. volume before the conference call

  2. Wanted to just take whatever small profit i had left
  3. Assumed FED meetings this week  was probably gonna be bad news for stocks anyways
  4. Didn’t wanna risk losing more money… live to fight again another day
